Sam Smolik

Vice President, Health, Safety, Environment and Operational Excellence

Sam Smolik is vice president, Health, Safety, Environment and Operational Excellence for LyondellBasell, one of the world’s largest olefins, polyolefins, chemicals and refining companies.

Sam’s responsibilities include oversight of the company’s Operational Excellence management system, Operational Excellence auditing, personal safety, process safety, environment, security, health and medical, and product stewardship.  He is the company liaison with the HSE Committee of the Supervisory Board.

Prior to joining LyondellBasell in November 2009, Smolik served as vice president, Global Downstream Health, Safety, Security and Environment of Royal Dutch Shell. Prior to joining Shell, he was vice president, Global Environment, Health, Safety and Security with The Dow Chemical Company and also held a variety of domestic and international leadership positions in manufacturing and engineering.

Smolik has held a number of leadership positions with organizations including The University of Texas at Austin (Engineering Advisory Board); Antwerp International School Foundation (President, Board of Directors); Ducks Unlimited (Conservation Programs Committee); World Environment Center (Board of Directors). He is a member of the Coastal Conservation Association and the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.

Smolik holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.  He is based in Houston, Texas.
