LyondellBasell’s Amazing Chemistry is helping build the future of electric cars!
A leading battery supplier relies on our products to make lightweight and durable batteries for electric vehicles. LyondellBasell’s integrated supply chain makes available a range of innovative materials that enable the manufacture of new age battery covers and components.
With car emission standards becoming stricter as governments attempt to improve air quality, car manufacturers are trying to find ways to improve efficiency and reduce automobile emissions.
The European Union is leading the way with aims to have an overall limit of around 95 g/km of carbon dioxide in 2020. In an effort to reach that goal, Germany also plans to put one million electric cars on the road within the next eight years.
“The low emission standards will drive the new economy of electric and hybrid vehicles,” says Michael Pohl, Business Development Manager for Europe. “Our innovative products look to play a vital role in that growth.”
Electric vehicles include hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and fully electric vehicles (EV). Roughly two million vehicles (or approximately two percent of all vehicles built) are projected to be HEV/EV three years from now. The heart of a future HEV is a Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery that stores the electricity to power these vehicles.
Battery covers currently used in some hybrid vehicles are made of metal and can add to the vehicle weight. Battery covers made from plastics are lighter in weight than metal and have the potential to increase the vehicle range. The reduced weight leads to better mileage while using less energy to accelerate the car to a certain speed.
This is one more way LyondellBasell and the company’s Amazing Chemistry are helping build – and spark -- a better tomorrow.
