New Family of Toppyl Resins Based on Polybutene-1 Addresses Consumer Needs for Convenience and Functionality
Today’s packaging must be practical, effective, safe and easy to open, without the need for a cutting instrument. That’s why LyondellBasell developed Toppyl compounds based on polybutene-1 (PB-1).
Converters, packers and packaging designers rely on Toppyl resins to produce reliable, consistent and easy-to-open packaging systems for consumers. Compared to standard resins, Toppyl grades offer improved safety, convenience, reduced frustration and optimum packaging opening forces. Toppyl resins also reduce complexity for film converters by offering a simple, robust (controlled and consistent peel force) and ready-to-use solution for seal-peel applications.
Toppyl resins enable converters to employ a fully formulated product for the entire sealing layer, without the need for blending with polyethylene. These compounds reduce the complexity for film converters by offering a simple and robust solution for seal-peel applications.

The Toppyl family includes a wide range of products selected by customers for numerous applications:
Toppyl SP2000B and Toppyl SP2001B
Grades selected for blown film that demonstrate a seal and peel against polyethylene substrates and against themselves in applications such as lidding film, coffee packaging, bags/pouches, vacuum packs, secondary medical packaging and the inside sealing layer of trays.
The Toppyl “C” Resins
Grades used to seal and peel against polypropylene (e.g., lidding film for a polypropylene tray) and also against themselves (e.g., bag/pouches)
- Toppyl SP2101C and Toppyl SP2103C (a higher peel force version of Toppyl SP2101C) are selected by customers for heat-sterilizable applications
- Toppyl SP2102C is selected for non-heat sterilizable applications
All three Toppyl products can be converted on a range of processing equipment for cast film, blown film, sheet extrusion and BOPP applications.
Toppyl SP2200F is also selected by customers for other film applications to achieve seals and peels against polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene and against itself.
