The blown film process, used to produce polyolefin-based film, is the most widely used conversion technique for film applications. Originally mono-layer dies were used, but it is now very common for blown film to be produced from multi-layer dies, depending upon the final requirements of the film.
Benefits and Applications
LyondellBasell customers can select from a large range of materials used in either mono-layer or multi-layer co-extruded structures. Grade choice depends upon the customer’s final application requirements. We offer a range of Lupolen and Petrothene low density and linear low density polyethylene products with different melt indexes, densities and additive packages. Our Hostalen and Alathon high density polyethylene resins are used by customers due to their excellent stiffness and mechanical properties. Moplen polypropylene resins often are chosen for their excellent optical properties.
Properties
When co-extruded structures are used, multiple layers can be utilized to provide different properties. Customers report that:
- Soft-touch skin layers can be produced using Adflex grades in the outside layers
- Seal-peel systems can be used in the outside layers to provide easy open packaging by utilizing polybutene-1 (PB-1) in the blend formulation
- Good stretchability can be obtained by including Lucalen and/or Adflex resins in the various layers of the film
- Different sealing temperatures can be obtained by using specialty grades in the sealing layer, such as Adsyl resins
- Dissimilar materials such as EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) or Polyamide (Nylon) can be bonded together with polyolefins through the use of Plexar resins
