Staple fibers are used in a wide range of textile applications, from carpets to nonwovens. They are produced by cutting continuous filaments into shorter lengths. Similar to wool, these short fibers are then spun and twisted into carpet yarns. Staple fibers are also dispersed on a conveyor belt to produce a uniform nonwoven web which is consolidated by thermal-bonding, needling or high-pressure water jets.
LyondellBasell’s Moplen and Pro-Fax homopolymer and copolymer resins are selected by customers to address the latest requirements in the production of staple fibers, providing high tensile strength and high elongation at break. Our Metocene polypropylene grades are used in applications requiring higher production speeds. Combined with our Adflex grades, very soft fabrics can be produced.
