LyondellBasell has been a pioneer in the development of gasoline additives based on the tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) molecule. Since the 1970s, these additives have been incorporated into gasoline to help meet increasing standards for cleaner burning fuels. In order to meet the needs of our customers, LyondellBasell's product line now includes gasoline grade (GTBA), methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), and ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE).
Benefits and Applications
ETBE is another gasoline additive produced from TBA. This material is produced with ethanol and has a lower Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) and better octane properties than MTBE.
ETBE and MTBE are designed and manufactured by Lyondell Chemical Company for use as blending ingredients in motor vehicle fuels. Neither product is commercially available from Lyondell for use in the United States.
Storage and Handling
The European Fuel Oxygenates Association is dedicated to the responsible usage of ethers in gasoline and provides resource guides and other information such as the Code of Best Practice when transporting ETBE and MTBE.
