LyondellBasell operates a worldwide product stewardship program that aims to make health, safety and environmental protection an integral part of the development, manufacture, distribution, use, recycling and disposal of all our products.
The product stewardship process begins with a cross functional team evaluation of each product or product group according to the level of risk. This is determined using hazard and exposure ratings. Product hazards are intrinsic characteristics with the potential to cause harm, such as flammability, corrosiveness, toxicity and non-biodegradability.
Product exposures measure the potential contact between a product and people or the environment. Exposure levels depend on the type of packaging, distribution, sales volume, number and sophistication of customers, and the product applications.
In addition to promoting the safe, responsible handling of products at our own manufacturing sites, we work closely with our suppliers, carriers, distributors and customers to help them maintain high safety and environmental standards. Our support includes: technical assistance, training, logistic support, health, safety and environmental advice , guidance and product information.
For example, we provide:
- HSE literature on products
- Product-specific safety training
- Advice on the handling and unloading of products
- Regulatory and toxicity information where appropriate
- Advice on clean-up procedures and accidental spills
- Third party and customer auditing for certain activities and products, including feedback and support.
