Glossary of Terms

Hazardous waste cannot be disposed of using standard waste-management routes (such as in a landfill). It should be treated to reduce its hazard level, if possible. If treatment is not appropriate, the waste must be contained, often within a purpose-built facility. Categories and requirements for hazardous wastes are established by nations.

Health Risk Assessments (HRA) are performed by qualified medical personnel on site. They assess the potential risks involved in workplace tasks. These include ergonomic, physical, biological and psychological hazards, as well as exposure time. We use HRAs to help us develop preventive measures.

HSE stands for health, safety and environment.

ISO 14001 is the International Standards Organization Environmental Management System.

Lost-time Injury (LTI) rate includes fatalities and lost-workday cases, but not restricted-work cases or medical-treatment cases.

Product stewardship is the responsible and ethical management of environmental, health and safety risks and benefits throughout the life cycle of a product.

Sustainable development involves the responsible and ethical use of resources, meeting present needs without compromising future generations. The concept is not limited to the key goal of environmental protection, but also considers economic growth and societal needs.
