Operational Excellence. Operational Excellence is LyondellBasell’s management system to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business.

Safety Performance. LyondellBasell employees and contractors are committed to the concept that all injuries are preventable, and together worked all of 2007 with no recordable injuries

The plant is licensed as a Major Hazards Facility under the Victorian State Government Occupational Health and Safety Act, Major Hazards Facilities Regulations 2000. Our operational and safety procedures are regularly reviewed by the Worksafe as part of our annual inspection regime.

The Geelong Plant received the 2008 Plastics and Chemicals Industries Association (PACIA) Health and Safety Award for the successful and safe implementation of its plant shutdown in 2007. The award recognizes individuals or groups who have undertaken innovative projects or activities that have resulted in making the plastics, chemicals and associated industries safer and healthier places to work.

Environmental Performance. The company has developed measures that minimize environmental impact. These include the safe treatment and disposal of hazardous wastes, prevention of air, water and soil pollution, and energy conservation. The company’s environmental management systems was certified to ISO 14001 in 2001.

As a voluntary participant in the Australian government’s Greenhouse Challenge program, the company monitors and reports greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the Geelong Plant and implements action plans to manage its energy consumption. The company incorporated an energy efficient heat-pump propane propylene splitter into the 2006 Geelong expansion.

The Geelong Plant received the 2007 Sustainability Award for Chemical Plants from the Plastics and Chemical Industry Association (PACIA) in recognition of the plant’s approach in the expansion project. The plant was commended for its efforts at energy efficiency, safety performance during construction and the proactive engagement and consultation with the community, neighbours and stakeholders.

In 2008, LyondellBasell Australia entered into a voluntary sustainability covenant with the Victorian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and the Plastics and Chemicals Industry Association (PACIA) aimed at further embedding sustainable business growth principles within the organization and supporting product innovation for greater resource efficiency in the Australian polypropylene market. LyondellBasell Australia has also committed to the implementation of the PACIA Sustainability Leadership Framework for Industry.
