The Maasvlakte plant is the largest PO/SM plant in the world where propylene oxide (PO) and styrene monomer (SM) are produced based on the company’s unique PO/SM technology. The plant is the company's first PO/SM plant in Europe and began operation in 2003. LyondellBasell and Bayer each own 50 percent of the plant with LyondellBasell serving as operator. The plant is located in the port of Rotterdam on a 60-hectare site located on Maasvlakte.

The chemicals produced at this site form the building blocks for other basic products, such as clothing, household products and construction materials. The propylene oxide produced is applied in a vast range of products for daily use, such as car seats, dashboards, mattresses, cosmetics and coolants. Styrene is used for the production of polystyrene, a basic product for the packing industry.

The Maasvlakte plant is one of three facilities that LyondellBasell operates in the Rotterdam port area. We also operate one facility in Moerdijk.
