The Maasvlakte plant is the largest PO/SM plant in the world where propylene oxide (PO) and styrene monomer (SM) are produced based on the unique PO/SM technology of LyondellBasell. The construction of this first PO/SM - plant for Lyondell in Europe was completed in third quarter of 2003 and the plant was put in service in the fourth quarter. LyondellBasell and Bayer each own 50 percent of the plant with LyondellBasell serving as operator. The plant is located in the port of Rotterdam on a 60-hectare site located on Maasvlakte.
The chemicals produced at the Maasvlakte Plant form the building blocks for other basic products, such as clothing, household products and construction materials. The propylene oxide produced is applied in a vast range of products for daily use, such as car seats, dashboards, mattresses, cosmetics and coolants. Styrene is used for the production of polystyrene, a basic product for the packaging industry.
