Community outreach. Plant managers meet regularly with a panel of community residents to share safety- and environmental-performance information and to discuss community expectations and concerns.
Explore & Experiment. Through LyondellBasell’s Explore & Experiment program, our employee volunteers offer hands-on science activities to local classrooms, sparking student interest in science. Thousands of students have benefited from our science expertise.
For years, we have offered summertime science-learning activities to local elementary-school students. Last year, students in grades 2 through 5 at Tuscola’s North Ward Elementary School attended a Summer Science Day presented by volunteers from our Tuscola Plant. Nearly 80 students participated in science demonstrations that included making their own silly putty and riding a hovercraft powered by a leaf blower.
Our employees shared their special skills with students at East Prairie Middle School to spark student interest in careers in the skilled trades. At the East Prairie Trades Fair, students learned about the skills needed for electrical work, pipefitting, welding and mechanical maintenance. Our employees also urged students to continue their focus on academics, emphasizing the importance of mathematics and communication in most careers.
At the East Prairie Engineering Fair, our engineers introduced students to the world of engineering and the career opportunities it offers.
Global Care Day. Thousands of our employees, worldwide, work to make a difference in the world by joining this annual community-service day. Many of these projects have improved community parks and playgrounds in Tuscola.
This year, our Community Champion volunteers cleared overgrown plant material and planted new landscaping at Prairie View Middle School. They also collected donations of food and money for the Social Action Ministry food pantry, which serves families throughout Tuscola.
Philanthropy. Our employees open their hearts and wallets to support local organizations. For example, they generously support local community-service agencies through an annual United Way payroll-pledge campaign.
Volunteerism. We encourage our employees’ active engagement in the local community. They donate hundreds of hours to community service every month. They also serve as firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians, science-fair judges, Scout leaders and coaches.
Community-service awards. The Tuscola Plant’s contributions to the community and the efforts of our employee volunteers have been recognized with a special Community Service Award from the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce.
