LyondellBasell’s Matagorda Complex Supports Local Recycling Efforts

April 25, 2019

Small actions can deliver a big impact, especially when it comes to creating a circular economy that helps to minimize waste while using resources wisely. LyondellBasell’s Matagorda Complex recently donated $4,000 to Bay City and the Palacios Recycling Center to help empower communities with the knowledge, tools and resources needed to continue positive habits. The aim of this initiative is to help communities take action to reduce their environmental footprint.

“The more we work together, the more families we can help recycle properly – ultimately creating healthier communities to protect our planet,” said Tony Wood, LyondellBasell Matagorda site manager. “By ensuring our community is equipped with the right information and the right tools, we can help drive and increase participation. As a founding member of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, programs like this demonstrate that simple actions can create a ripple that benefits us all.”

Bay City will use the donated funds to create educational material and make tangible items such as coloring books and tote bags available to residents at multiple city facilities. Resident will be able to receive items at the recycling center, library and city hall.

“We are committed to maximizing our efforts around our residential recycling program,” said Marla Jasek, Bay City assistant director of public works. “With help from great partners like LyondellBasell Matagorda, we can meaningfully improve recycling, creating stronger and more sustainable communities.”

The Palacios Recycling Center recently purchased a new computer system with funds donated by the complex. The computer will be used to design and print fliers that will help educate the public about sustainability and the circular economy. Additionally, the center is planning to coordinate workshops for residents.

“Educating residents on how to recycle will have positive long-term effects on our community,” said Peggy Georgi, Palacios Recycling Center coordinator. “We’re teaching our residents lifelong recycling habits that will pay dividends for years to come.”

LyondellBasell’s Matagorda complex encourages its employees to recycle and take the lead in sustainability. For example, last year the complex recycled more than 1 million pounds of scrap polymer and associated material, keeping as much waste as possible out of landfills. By recycling polymer waste, it can be used to create items such as trash bags and shrink wrap. Additionally, many LyondellBasell employees take part in Bay City’s annual “Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day” in Matagorda County.
