Victoria Earns NPRA Safety Award

May 11, 2011

VICTORIA, Texas, May 11, 2011 – LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB) announced today that its Victoria Plant has earned a Meritorious Safety Performance Award from the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) for outstanding safety performance in 2010.

The award, announced today during the National Safety Conference and Exhibition in Dallas, is among 13 safety awards earned by seven LyondellBasell plants. Previously announced was LyondellBasell’s selection for the Distinguished Safety Award, NPRA’s top safety honor.

“Safety and reliability in our operations form the cornerstone of our strategy at LyondellBasell, and we are very proud of the employees and contractors at these seven plants that helped to achieve this recognition by NPRA,” said Sam Smolik, vice president of health, safety, environment and Operational Excellence.

Meritorious Safety Performance is awarded to facilities with a total recordable incidence rate (TRIR) of 0.8 or less and no workplace related fatality, process safety event or community impact during the calendar year 2010. The Victoria Plant’s 0.0 (no injuries) TRIR places it among the top tier of refineries and chemical manufacturing sites in the country.

The Victoria Plant recently achieved “triple double” health, safety and environmental milestones of two years without an Occupational Safety and Health Administration recordable injury, a process-safety event or an environmental event. An OSHA recordable injury is one which requires medical treatment other than of a minor first-aid nature. A process-safety event is an unexpected equipment failure that impacts safety, processes or equipment or causes an environmental release. An environmental event is a release in excess of a permitted quantity.

Sites recognized by NPRA included plants in Alvin, La Porte, Pasadena and Victoria, Texas; and Lake Charles, La., operated by LyondellBasell affiliate Equistar Chemicals, and a chemical plant in Pasadena, Texas, operated by Lyondell Chemical Company.

The Victoria Plant produces high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic resins that are used to make consumer products including housewares, home construction materials, automotive parts, food packaging and personal-care products. The plant has approximately 80 employees and contractors on a site covering approximately 33 acres. It is located on Texas Highway 185 between Victoria and Bloomington.
