Project brought 3,600 construction jobs and boosted ethylene output

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas. – Jan. 19, 2017 – LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB), one of the world's largest plastics, chemical and refining companies, today announced completion of the 800 million pounds-per-year ethylene expansion project at the company’s Corpus Christi, Texas, site. The project increases ethylene capacity at the facility by 50 percent; from 1.7 billion pounds-per-year to 2.5 billion pounds-per-year.

"This large, complex project has been a win-win for our company and the community," said LyondellBasell Corpus Christi Site Manager Randal Tatum. "While the project is an important part of the long-term strategy for our company, we also take great pride in the ongoing economic contribution we are making to the local community. I want to thank our neighbors and community leaders for their support."

Ethylene is a basic chemical building block used in consumer products such as housewares, construction materials, automotive parts, food packaging and personal care products. Global demand for ethylene has consistently grown at a 4 percent annual rate, according to IHS Markit, a global information and analytics company.

The expansion required approximately 1,700 tons of structural steel, 36 miles of pipe, 620 truckloads of concrete and over 1 million linear feet of cable. It took approximately 800,000 engineering work hours and more than 8 million construction work hours to complete the project.

"The recently completed expansion of the LyondellBasell Corpus Christi Complex is great for the area and reaffirms the company’s commitment to our community," said U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas). "The expansion shows that the Coastal Bend remains an excellent place to do business."

The Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation estimated that taxable spending by workers resulted in an additional $40 million influx for the local economy in a variety of areas, from hotel rooms to restaurants and other businesses. Additionally, the local and state taxing districts are expected to receive more than $10 million annually from the project, totaling more than $100 million over a 10-year period following completion.

"This economic development project created 3,600 jobs at the peak of construction and had a positive impact for our local working families," said State Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa (D-McAllen). "This investment in the Coastal Bend community and the innovative expansion project will help meet the growing demand for consumer needs."

"The expansion of this facility is a significant capital investment in our community," said Nueces County Commissioner Mike Pusley. "All of this culminates into millions of dollars of economic benefit to our local economy."

The Corpus Christi project is part of LyondellBasell’s previously announced $3 - $4 billion multi-year investment in the Gulf Coast region.
