Community Involvement

We recognize that being a socially responsible member of the community requires maintaining an open door for dialogue with our community and actively working to support community needs.

Community Involvement and Volunteerism

The Matagorda Complex is actively involved in the local community with groups including First Fridays, American Red Cross, Women’s Crisis Center, United Way, Coastal Conservation Association, Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Club, various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs and many others. Employees, who are encouraged to contribute their time and resources, volunteer as emergency responders, Scout leaders, coaches, mentors, teachers, and board members on key community and civic organizations.  Plant volunteers make the holidays merry with gifts for elementary school students and elderly residents.

Community Outreach

Plant management meets monthly with a community group comprised of a cross-section of leaders from community organizations, businesses and industry to share plant information and discuss community expectations and concerns.

Education

Employee volunteers teach Junior Achievement classes at Matagorda ISD, 1st through 8th grades.  The volunteers for Junior Achievement are instrumental in sparking students’ interest in  work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills by using experiential learning to inspire kids to dream big and reach their potential.  The Matagorda plant has been very supportive of the Bay City Process Technology (PTECH) program and has several employees who teach classes. The plant has contributed funds and equipment for the PTECH program.

LyondellBasell’s Global Care Day

More than 50 employee volunteers and family members annually help their community. Projects have included installing outdoor exercise stations along a walking path, spreading mulch around each station and planting small trees at the city of Bay City’s Hardeman Park. They also have repaired the Matagorda County United Way facility’s driveway entrance, pressure-washed the building, landscaped and repaired the handicap parking location.
