LyondellBasell to demolish building at Plant

October 27, 2010

PASADENA, Oct. 27, 2010 -- LyondellBasell today announced that the company will demolish a building in a non-operating area of its Bayport Polymers Plant, 12001 Bay Area Blvd., between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13.

The demolition does not involve any process areas and will not disrupt operations. The demolition work is being done in a safe and controlled manner by demolition experts and there is no danger to the local community, surrounding facilities or site workers.

“Every effort will be made to minimize impact to our community, but our neighbors might hear a noise like thunder,” said Site Manager Guy Tremblay. “We want them to be aware so as not to cause any concerns.”

The building is approximately eight stories tall (110 feet tall, 40 feet wide, 90 feet deep) and will be demolished so that it collapses upon itself. The fall of the building will result in a loud noise that is expected to sound like thunder and have minimal vibration.  The noise might be audible 1.5 to 2 miles away and might be visible in the immediate area of the plant.

To minimize interruption and disturbance to the community, the work is being performed on a weekend morning and the lower three floors will be covered with a curtain of steel-link fence and geotextile fabric. The curtain will completely cover the lower portion of the building to minimize any possible debris or dust.

LyondellBasell’s Bayport Polymers plant produces polymers that are used by its customers in consumer products such as food containers, medical syringes, carpeting, diapers and plastic components in vehicles. It has approximately 270 workers and is one of four LyondellBasell facilities in the Pasadena Industrial District in the Houston Bay Area.
