The AFPM Safety Awards Program is part of a comprehensive safety program developed by AFPM’s Safety and Health Committee to promote accident prevention in the petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing industries.

The Elite Silver Safety Award is presented to petrochemical plants that have exhibited excellent safety performance and program innovation. The award represents the top five percent of industry top safety performers.

The announcement was made May 18 at the AFPM National Safety Conference in New Orleans.

“This award recognizes the hard work and dedication of the Chocolate Bayou team.  Our Employees and Contractors strive for excellence every day.  Their commitment to GoalZERO performance made this award possible,” said Chocolate Bayou Plant Site Manager Gregory Gray.

In addition to the Chocolate Bayou Plant, LyondellBasell’s Lake Charles Plant in Westlake, La., was honored with the Distinguished Safety Award, the highest safety award given by AFPM. Other LyondellBasell facilities that received AFPM Safety Awards include its La Porte, Texas complex, which earned an Elite Gold Safety Award, and its Edison, N.J., and Tuscola, Ill., facilities which were both given Elite Silver Safety Awards.

“At LyondellBasell, we firmly believe that a strong safety culture ultimately delivers stronger operational performance,” said Bob Patel, LyondellBasell’s CEO. “This award isn’t just about a company accomplishment; it’s far bigger than that. This is really about our employees going home safely every day. In my view there is no higher priority.”
