Donation Allows for Purchase of Two Dozen New Microscopes

CLINTON, Iowa – Oct. 28, 2015 – LyondellBasell, one of the world's largest plastics, chemical and refining companies, recently awarded Clinton Community College with a $10,000 corporate grant. The donation enables the college to purchase two dozen cutting edge microscopes for students to use in their science labs.

“We’ve experienced the benefits of new employees already being familiar with the tools and equipment we have onsite,” said Christopher Cain, LyondellBasell Clinton Complex site manager. “It is incredibly satisfying to help prepare today’s students during their academic journey.”

Clinton Community College offers Associate degrees in the Health Science and Biological Science fields. Students in these programs will utilize this new equipment in courses that are core requirements for their degrees.

“LyondellBasell has always been a great supporter to our school,” said Dr. Karen Vickers, Clinton Community College president. “This funding is very important and will help us to keep current with equipment and software, so our students can work with the tools they will see in an employment setting.”

The LyondellBasell Clinton Complex employs approximately 400 workers and is one of the largest chemical plants in Iowa. The plant manufactures ethylene, the world’s most widely-used petrochemical, which is then converted into polyethylene plastic resins. These resins serve as building blocks for products such as leak proof and shatter proof containers for industrial and household chemicals, packaging that protects our food and children’s toys that are safe and durable.

“In addition to the financial support, LyondellBasell has assisted the college in reviewing our programs, which allows our faculty to stay abreast of trends in industry,” Vickers said. “This backing helps us to provide education for our students that is current, relevant and will help them to be productive employees once they graduate.”
