Facility hosts students from San Jacinto College’s career camp

LA PORTE, Texas – July 25, 2018 – The La Porte Complex of LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB), one of the largest plastics, chemicals and refining companies in the world, welcomed 20 Houston-area middle and high school students from San Jacinto College’s EnergyVenture Camp. Operators, engineers and electricians from the complex shared details about their line of work and experience, providing students meaningful insight into various job options.

“It’s a privilege to have a hand in introducing our future leaders to career possibilities in our industry,” said Chris Cain, site manager of LyondellBasell’s La Porte Complex. “These students are at a point of either thinking about or actually planning their collegiate path. Understanding the educational requirements, day-to-day responsibilities and work environment associated with any career is valuable to the decision-making process.”

The La Porte Complex has partnered with San Jacinto College for eight years to host the institution’s EnergyVenture Camp, a summer camp for youth focused on the energy industry and its career opportunities.

“Our program enables students to directly interact with a variety of industry professionals,” said Linda Drobnich, senior business development manager at San Jacinto College. “Essentially, we are helping fill the pipeline of future workers. The likelihood of these students staying in the Gulf Coast region to meet the future employment demands is greater if they know they have good employment choices here.”

The concept for the camp was inspired by the State of Texas Industry Cluster Initiative Report and the East Harris County Manufacturing Association’s research, which indicated a lack of awareness by young people of the good paying, high-skill jobs available in the energy industry.

The camp, designed for students to learn while having fun, includes lab experiments, tours of energy-related production facilities and hearing from guest speakers currently working in the field.
