Matagorda site employees and their families volunteered at the Wadsworth Community Center for their Global Care Day project. Created 15 years ago, the company initiative involves thousands of workers in 20 countries across six continents. The goal is to leave a long, sustainable impact in the communities where LyondellBasell operates.
“We are very happy that LyondellBasell is helping to make our center look better, “ said Wadsworth Community Center Director Martha Cartwright, “This is a county owned building but we try to pay for everything ourselves and not depend on the county to help take care of it.”
More than 30 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work over the course of four evenings. Ceiling tiles were replaced and the interior given a new coat of spackle. With paint brushes in hand, crews painted the entire inside of the center. A thorough power washing gave the outside of the center a lighter and brighter look. The kitchen cabinets were repaired and renovated. The center’s sign by the road was also replaced.
“We are committed to taking care of our neighbors,” explained LyondellBasell engineer Patrick Petrisky, “Being able to use a combination of everyone’s talents and abilities to better the community is extremely rewarding. It is great to see the smiling faces of those who will benefit from a new and improved community center.”
The Wadsworth Community Center was built in 1995 because residents in the small town used to have to travel to find a gathering place. The facility is now used as a polling place, a wedding venue, rented for private functions and even home to the local VFW chapter.
