HOUSTON, May 11, 2011 – LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB) today announced that its Bayport Polymers Plant in Pasadena earned the 2010 Distinguished Safety Award from the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA).
Seven LyondellBasell plants earned a total of 13 safety awards today for outstanding safety performance in 2010, including seven awards for its Bayport Choate, Bayport Polymers, Bayport Underwood and La Porte plants during the National Safety Conference and Exhibition in Dallas. This safety performance places the plants among the top tier of the refineries and chemical manufacturing sites in the country.
The Distinguished Safety Award (DSA) is the highest award given by NPRA and the LyondellBasell plant is the only site to receive the award for the year. The award recognizes a superior level of personal and process safety performance in the domestic refining and petrochemical manufacturing industries.
“Safety and reliability in our operations form the cornerstone of our strategy at LyondellBasell, and we are very proud of the employees and contractors at these seven plants that helped to achieve this recognition by NPRA,” said Sam Smolik, vice president of health, safety, environment and Operational Excellence.
The NPRA presented the Meritorious Safety Performance Award to Bayport Choate, Bayport Underwood and the La Porte Complex; the Award for Safety Achievement in Years to Bayport Polymers (eight years without a lost workday case incident) and the La Porte Complex (one year without a lost workday case incident); and the Award for Safety Achievement in Hours to the La Porte Complex (two million safe hours without a lost workday case incident).
Meritorious Safety Performance is awarded to facilities with a total recordable incident rate (TRIR) of 0.8 or less and no workplace related fatality, process safety event or community impact during the calendar year 2010. This safety performance places the plants among the top tier of the chemical manufacturing sites in the country.
In 2010, Bayport Choate had a 0.6 TRIR, Bayport Polymers had a 0.0 TRIR (no injuries) and the La Porte Complex had a 0.7 TRIR. Bayport Choate is operated by Lyondell Chemical and the other two plants are operated by Equistar Chemicals LP, both LyondellBasell subsidiaries.
Other LyondellBasell sites recognized by NPRA included facilities operated by Equistar in Alvin and Victoria in Texas; and Lake Charles, La.
LyondellBasell has four plants and its pipeline operations in the La Porte-Bayport area. The facilities produce a variety of products that our customers convert into consumer products. These include plastics for housewares, building materials, automotive parts, food packaging to store and keep goods fresh, personal care products and medicines, to name a few. The facilities employ nearly 1,700 workers.
