Clinton Complex honored for safety by American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers Association

June 03, 2019

CLINTON, Iowa June 3, 2019 – LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB), one of the largest plastics, chemicals and refining companies in the world, announced the Clinton Complex was awarded with the distinguished safety award for exemplary level of safety performance, a top honor from the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM).

“Only seven facilities in the country won the DSA this year. Receiving this level of recognition shows that no matter the size of the facility or staff, we can deliver excellence every day,” said Dale Friedrichs, LyondellBasell Health Safety and Environment Vice President. “Our ultimate goal at LyondellBasell is that everyone who comes through our gates, goes home safely to their families.”

Two other LyondellBasell facilities – Chocolate Bayou and Channelview, both in Texas – earned the Distinguished Safety Award (DSA) during the AFPM Safety Awards ceremony. The nominations were voted on by industry peers to recognize refining and petrochemical manufacturing facilities’ efforts in delivering safety excellence.

“It’s only when you instill a comprehensive approach like LyondellBasell’s that you get this type of outcome,” said Lara Swett, senior director, AFPM Safety Programs. “What this translates to is thousands of people who know they work in an environment where safety is a top priority and that dedication extends to the community and neighbors as well.”

Each location must undergo a rigorous screening process that includes a high bar for the total recordable incidence rate (TRIR), the amount of time employees missed work and process safety events for a calendar year. To qualify for the DSA, sites must have a recordable injury rate of 0.3 or lower and have zero significant process safety events. The DSA nominees must also go through a detailed interview session.

“Our safety performance defines us,” said Michael Vopatek, health, safety and environmental manager. “There is no greater emphasis than the safety of our workers and our community, so to be recognized for our strong performance is a great honor. We are proud but there is always room for improvement.”

For several of the sites, including the Clinton Complex achieving AFPM Safety Awards is a repeat performance.

Now in its 27th year, the AFPM Safety Awards event is designed to promote safety performance achievements and to serve as part of a comprehensive approach to developing accident prevention programs in the petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing industries.

About LyondellBasell’s Clinton Complex
With approximately 400 employees and contractors, and covering an area of almost 239 acres, the Clinton Complex is one of the largest chemical plants in Iowa. Using natural gas liquids as a feedstock, the plant manufactures ethylene, the world’s most widely-used petrochemical, which is then converted into polyethylene plastic resins. These resins are the building blocks for products such as leak-proof and shatter-proof containers for industrial and household chemicals, packaging that protects food from spoilage and contamination, and children’s toys that are safe and durable.
