Equistar Pipelines: Safety, awareness & community partnership

Serving communities along the Texas Gulf Coast

LyondellBasell manages a network of over 1,500 miles of underground transmission pipelines under its Equistar Pipeline Operations business. These pipelines safely transport essential petrochemical products like olefins and natural gas liquids to LYB facilities and other customers along the Gulf Coast.

Storage facilities supporting safe operations

Both facilities are operated around the clock from our Clear Lake Control Center, ensuring safe and efficient product movement.

Safety starts with awareness

We believe safety is a shared responsibility. That's why we follow GoalZERO standards, striving for zero injuries and zero process safety, product safety and environmental incidents.

Our operations are monitored 24/7 from our Clear Lake Control Center, which uses advanced systems to manage pipeline flow and maintain constant communication with emergency responders and the public.

Community engagement

Our pipeline operations actively support local communities through donations to organizations such as:

  • Mont Belvieu and Markham Fire Departments
  • San Jacinto Museum and Battlefield
  • Holiday Angels
  • Clear Creek ISD

We also collaborate with emergency responders, schools and landowners to promote pipeline safety and awareness.

Pipeline markers

Pipeline markers are signs placed along pipeline rights-of-way to indicate the presence of underground pipelines. While they do not show the exact location or depth, they serve as a visual reminder that a pipeline is nearby.

These markers typically display the pipeline operator's name, emergency contact number and the type of product being transported (e.g., natural gas, crude oil or petrochemicals). You'll often see them near roads, railways and property boundaries to help prevent accidental damage during digging or construction.

Call 811 before you dig

Although pipelines are patrolled and monitored, your diligence is also essential for keeping communities safe.

Digging without knowing what's underground can be dangerous. Whether you're planting trees, installing a fence, or starting a construction project, calling 811 ensures underground pipelines and utilities are marked before you dig, and it is required by law.

Steps to safe digging
  1. Call 811 or visit Texas811.org
  2. Utility companies mark underground lines free of charge
  3. Dig safely, respecting the marks and buffer zones
Excavation safety tips
  • Use caution and follow state laws
  • Remember not all pipelines are visibly marked
  • Report any damage immediately—even minor scrapes or dents

Emergency response

If you suspect a leak:

  1. Evacuate immediately on foot, moving upwind or crosswind
  2. Call 911
  3. Notify LYB at 800-525-7516
  4. Warn others to stay away
  5. Avoid ignition sources of heat or sparks (including cell phones, pagers, 2-way radios), smoking and other open flames
