Building a baby bottle with sustainability in mind
Babies deserve the best care that not only keeps them safe today but also considers the world they'll grow up in tomorrow.
For nearly 70 years, Pigeon Singapore has been committed to creating a more baby-friendly world through mother and baby care products that blend safety, comfort and innovation. More recently, Pigeon has added sustainability to the product blend — and realized that a collaboration with LYB was the way to achieve it.
Bringing CirculenRenew solutions to baby care
Traditionally, Pigeon's baby bottles were made with 100% virgin polypropylene (PP). But to achieve its sustainability goals, the company reached out to LYB for an alternative solution that would help to reduce the environmental footprint without compromising safety and quality.
LYB brought its bio-circular based CirculenRenew PP resins — polypropylene sourced from renewable feedstocks like used cooking oils and other bio-wastes and residues — to this collaboration. These resins are manufactured through an ISCC PLUS-certified mass balance approach, which helps ensure traceability. Compared to virgin, fossil-based PP resins, CirculenRenew PP offers a lower product carbon footprint over its lifecycle.
The first Pigeon product partially sourced from CirculenRenew resins was the popular SofTouch™ line of baby bottles for nursing. Through this collaboration, Pigeon incorporated 20% CirculenRenew PP resins into key parts of the SofTouch nursing bottle — including the cap, hood, handle and bottle body.
By using CirculenRenew resins, Pigeon reduces its reliance on virgin plastic. And parents still get the same trusted quality and safety they've come to expect from Pigeon's 60-plus years of breastfeeding research.
Expanding sustainability efforts
The renewed SofTouchTM line was first launched in Indonesia in December 2023, with successful rollouts across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania following in 2024.
"Thanks to ongoing advances in the CirculenRenew product family, LYB is delivering on its commitment to creating solutions for everyday sustainable living and supporting customers in achieving their sustainability goals," said Allen Yu, senior vice president of LyondellBasell, Asia Pacific. "We are very excited to collaborate with Pigeon Singapore on this project, which represents the first application of CirculenRenew grades for baby products."
