Reimaging travel: Samsonite and LYB take a collaborative journey toward sustainability

Sustainability is as important to LYB as it is to the customers we serve. The LYB commitment to sustainability is why Samsonite partnered with us to help fulfill their vision of becoming the most sustainable lifestyle bag and luggage company in the world.

Creating a suitcase with recycled content

The collaborative efforts between LYB and Samsonite focus on giving new life to used plastics. At our mechanical recycling facilities in Belgium and the Netherlands, we transformed post-consumer plastics—such as discarded packaging—into high-quality polypropylene (PP). Samsonite put this material to use in the outer shell of its S'Cure ECO limited-edition suitcase collection, making it the company's first suitcase crafted from recycled plastic waste.

Specifically, Samsonite selected CirculenRecover, a recycled PP grade developed by LYB to withstand the demanding conditions of travel. With high impact resistance, even in low temperatures, this PP grade provided durability, proving that recycled materials can meet premium product standards.

Building on early successes

The innovations keep coming. Samsonite has since expanded its line of circular travel luggage using the LYB Circulen portfolio of polymers. Samsonite's newly launched ESSENS™ line uses shells made with at least 70% recycled content while still offering vibrant colors — something other recycled materials can't easily achieve. Samsonite also launched PROXIS™ Circular limited collections, featuring Samsonite's first suitcase incorporating bio-circular based polymers sourced from used cooking oil, developed by LYB. The suitcase shell sheets are produced using the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) mass balance approach.

LYB and Samsonite value the innovation that this collaboration has brought to the travel luggage market. Together, the companies are proving that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand, setting a new standard for the travel industry and paving the way toward a more circular future.
