LyondellBasell Community Service Spans Five Continents for Global Care Day

April 05, 2012

HOUSTON, April 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- LyondellBasell volunteers on five continents will work together on Saturday, April 14 to create positive change in their local communities as part of the company's Global Care Day program for community service.

More than 3,500 LyondellBasell volunteers in 61 communities will participate in the company's 13th annual Global Care Day. The worldwide day of community service will see people helping people in 20 countries with a combined 14,000 hours of volunteer service. The numbers add up to a better world, one community at a time.

"Global Care Day is a special day for LyondellBasell. While many of our people dedicate their time and energy to our communities throughout the year, Global Care Day gives us an opportunity to use our scale to be a catalyst for positive change in communities around the world in a span of 24 hours," said LyondellBasell CEO Jim Gallogly.

Some LyondellBasell sites have organized multiple service projects, adding up to 69 total projects that will provide an estimated economic impact of nearly $420,000. Projects include debris removal at Burgaz Island off the coast of Istanbul, Turkey, the banks of the rivers Main and Rhein in Germany, and the Alishan National Scenic Area in Taiwan. Environmental learning centers and habitats will be built for schools in Houston, La Porte, and Channelview, all in Texas. A historic African-American cemetery in Houston will be cleared and landscaped, a stone wall will be painted at a school in Ferrara, Italy, and a park in Bay City, Texas, will receive new trees and outdoor exercise stations along a walking path.

Other projects will assist people in need, such as orphans in Vietnam; grieving children in Lansing, Mich.; the hungry in Melbourne, Australia, and Mansfield, Texas; abused children or women in Jackson, Tenn., Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Westlake, La.; and a center for people with disabilities in Houston.

LyondellBasell established Global Care Day in 2000 as a way to reach out to local communities where the company operates. It challenges employees worldwide to participate in community service above and beyond ongoing community involvement activities with a special project on the same day. Each participating site selects a project that meets the following criteria: it addresses a community need, it is aligned with one of the company's community-relations focus-areas of education, environmental conservancy or community prosperity and the result will be a visible improvement because of employee involvement.
