LyondellBasell to showcase its leading polyolefins capabilities at Interplastica in Moscow

January 08, 2008

January 8, 2008 – LyondellBasell Industries, the new global leader in polymers, chemicals and fuels, will feature its world-class polyolefins technology, production and marketing offerings at Interplastica 2008, Russia’s premier trade fair for the plastics and rubber industries. Interplastica will be held January 29 through February 1 at Moscow’s Exhibition Center in Krasnaya Presnya. Visit LyondellBasell at stand 1D 28/E29 in Hall 1.

“Exhibiting at Interplastica this year provides us with an exciting platform to present our expanded capabilities as LyondellBasell,” said Elena Cherkinskaya, head of the company’s Moscow office which opened in 2006. “It is another way of demonstrating our strong commitment to Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Customers seeking a clear advantage in this expanding market will learn how LyondellBasell’s broad product portfolio and manufacturing flexibility can deliver exceptional value.”

Addressing regional demand for high-performance packaging resins

LyondellBasell’s exhibit will feature polyolefins that can provide specialized performance attributes to address new packaging trends, offering the potential for inter-material replacement in applications historically the domain of PET and glass. The company’s Stretchene PP and PE resins can be used to produce very high levels of rigidity, transparency, impact strength and production output for demanding injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) applications such as food and household chemical packaging.

The company’s Metocene resins offer customers design versatility, exceptional purity, and high levels of transparency and stiffness for today’s consumer packaging. “We have found that converters want high-performance resins that can deliver a competitive advantage for the growing Russian packaging market,” said Ivan Zaitsev, LyondellBasell’s Business Development Manager in Russia and CIS. “Interplastica gives us the opportunity to show customers what our resins can do to meet their needs.”

Machine manufacturer Negri Bossi will be running LyondellBasell's Moplen HP 648 T resin, which is used by customers in thin wall packaging applications, at the Negri Bossi exhibit in Hall 1, Stand C8/D9. Customers benefit from the resin’s good flowability and high stiffness properties in applications such as dairy containers and other food packaging.

Resins based on the company’s proprietary Catalloy process technology will also be featured. These polymers are selected by customers for flexible packaging applications that require low seal initiation temperatures, broad processing windows, excellent optics and good mechanical properties. “Through a unique combination of catalysts, technology and monomers, Catalloy process resins can also produce high-performance characteristics for applications in automotive, wire & cable, geomembranes and roofing, market areas where we see a growing need for our advanced polyolefins,” added Zaitsev.

In order to meet increasing needs for specialty polymers used in medical devices, LyondellBasell will introduce its Purell family of select PE and PP grades at Interplastica. These resins can provide advantages in design, functionality and regulatory aspects, and are produced in conjunction with a medical protocol tailor-made to address the specialised requirements of customers in the medical device and pharmaceutical packaging markets.

A strategic focus in a dynamic region

LyondellBasell’s exhibit will also showcase the company’s pioneering PP and PE process technologies, and how they are addressing the growing needs of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. As the global leader in polyolefins, LyondellBasell offers differentiating technologies that enable companies to remain competitive and responsive to market dynamics. With more than 200 polyolefin process licenses granted totaling 37 million tonnes, LyondellBasell’s manufacturingtechnologies are industry standards. In just the last three years, the company has granted PP and PE licenses equaling approximately 13 million tonnes. In Russia, the company has granted licenses totaling 1,500 KT, which include its latest PP and PE technologies, Spherizone and Spherilene.

Further reinforcing the company’s commitment to the region is its participation in the development of the first integrated world-scale petrochemical complex in Kazakhstan, in partnership with KazMunayGaz Exploration and Production and SAT & Company. This complex is expected to include PP and PE plants based on LyondellBasell technologies. “These projects underline our strategic focus in Russia and place us at the forefront of technology providers in Russia,” said Elena Cherkinskaya.

Through its Polish joint venture Basell Orlen Polyolefins (BOP), LyondellBasell serves the fast-growing markets in Eastern Europe, as well as Western Europe. BOP operates two world-class plants -- a new 400 KT Spheripol polypropylene unit and a new 320 KT Hostalen high density polyethylene unit in Plock.

Alastian, one of LyondellBasell’s online business channels will also be on display at Interplastica. Available to customers in Central and Eastern Europe for the past year, Alastian has already proven its value in this region. “Positive customer feedback highlighted Alastian’s excellent features, including accessibility to over 60 grades, daily price updates, a simple online ordering platform and easy follow up on existing and pending orders,” said Roman Chepushtanov, Alastian concept seller for Russia and CIS.
