Equistar Commercializes TTEG

August 29, 2002

HOUSTON, August 29, 2002 – Equistar Chemicals, LP has commercialized a chemical grade of tetraethylene glycol. Designated TTEG, the glycol was put into production to offer customers an alternate US source of supply. According to David Rubin, global business manager, EO and ethylene glycols, TTEG fits well with Equistar's business strategy, which focuses on working with customers to identify market needs.

Two of the primary applications for TTEG are as a solvent extraction aid in refining and as a chemical intermediate in the production of plasticizers.

TTEG is a colorless, odorless liquid that is miscible with water and many other organic solvents. Many of its properties are similar to the lower ethylene glycols, including freezing point depressant capability, water and organic compound compatibility, and its solvent, lubricant, plasticizing and hygroscopic properties. However, TTEG has a higher boiling point and lower volatility.

A product of the company's ethylene glycol production process, chemical grade TTEG is now commercially available through the combined Lyondell Chemical Company and Equistar Chemicals, LP sales force.

Equistar produces a complete range of high quality ethylene glycols including ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and now tetraethylene glycol, which are used as chemical intermediates in the manufacture of many ester-based plastics and textiles. Their excellent solvent properties make them useful in the manufacture of latex paints, surface cleaners, adhesives, hydraulic fluids, printing inks and electronics; and their high boiling point makes them an excellent choice for automotive engine coolants and heat transfer fluids.
