NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa., November 20, 2009 – LyondellBasell has launched a new addition to its broad portfolio of high density polyethylene (HDPE) resins. Alathon L4555X02 (MI2 – 0.55 g/10min, density - 0.945 g/cc) is the latest grade to join the Alathon family of film resins known for their high tensile strength and very low gels. It is these characteristics that make this MMW HDPE resin ideally suited for high-performance film applications such as tubular food and produce wrap, hay bale wrap, industrial tarps, shading nets and protective netting. Alathon L4555X02 is manufactured in Victoria, Texas.
Increased strength
The narrow molecular weight distribution of Alathon L4555X02 is critical to maximizing orientation capabilities. Its draw ratio, the amount of orientation introduced to the film, leads to increased tensile strength. "Higher draw ratios allow our customers to produce the strongest product using the least amount of material," explained Glenn Cozzone, LyondellBasell’s manager for North American product development.
Lower gels
Alathon L4555X02 was developed to maximize film properties and process capability. It combines greater bubble stability and stretchability, while helping to reduce head pressure and extruder load. Internal lab testing has shown that Alathon L4555X02 has significantly lower gels than competing resins. This reduction of gels is critical in applications requiring orientation, as it reduces the number of breaks in the orientation and/or weaving processes, reducing downtime and increasing productivity of the lines.
