Honoring Those Who Keep Us Safe

As we celebrate first responders across the country on National First Responders Day, October 28th,it’s also a time to reflect on ways we show our appreciation to a group that risks so much for our well-being. LyondellBasell puts a real emphasis on supporting the men and women who bravely put their lives on the line for us every day. Supporting first responders is a key focus area for the company’s Advancing Good program, which also contributes resources toward advancing our communities, advancing our planet and preparing tomorrow’s workforce.

“It takes a special kind of person to be a first responder, and our company has a deep appreciation for these individuals,” said Phillip Reid, Director, Regional Health, Safety and Environment, Americas, at LyondellBasell. “I think about those who are part of our sites’ emergency response teams, and I am overwhelmed with gratitude for all the sacrifices they’ve made and continue to make to keep us all safe. We are especially indebted to all the good – told and untold – that our first responders do.”

At LyondellBasell, we make quality medical devices possible. From the products that go into making bullet-proof vests, first aid kits and fire fighter helmets, to contributions toward equipment, disaster relief efforts and training, LyondellBasell supports first responders all over the world. In the U.S., the company has helped to prepare Texas-based firefighters by collaborating with the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service in College Station to offer specialized Industrial Emergencies for Municipal-Based Responders (IEMBR) training.

Additionally, in an effort to assist with keeping Houston-area firefighters healthy and strong, LyondellBasell has provided funds for ongoing extractor installations in local fire stations. The extractor is used to clean and rid firefighters’ gear of dangerous carcinogens that they may have come in contact with during their response. The company even supports initiatives to help children understand the role of a firefighter and first responder.

“I have been a member of the City of Jackson (Tennessee) Fire Department for many years now, and I am honored that LyondellBasell continues to support efforts like our fire prevention program for elementary schools,” said Jackson Fire Chief Darryl Samuels. “With the company’s help, we’ve purchased coloring books, helmets, sticker badges and brochures to educate students on fire safety and preparedness.”

LyondellBasell recognizes the need for all first responders to be trained, prepared and have the necessary equipment to protect our communities. That’s why the company extends support to police departments in areas where it operates, including the Camanche Police Department in Clinton, Iowa. The company recently made a donation helping the department to develop a program protecting senior citizens from online safety and teaching techniques on how seniors can remain safe in their homes.

“Senior citizens are vulnerable, and it is our job to make sure that they are protected and feel safe within our communities,” said Police Chief Colin Reid, Camanche Police Department.

It’s undeniable that first responders are the backbone of our neighborhoods, schools and ultimately our nation. They stand on the frontlines to assist and protect without hesitation. Emergency response team member Chris Chaisson from LyondellBasell’s Lake Charles facility (pictured below) said it’s an honor to be on the frontlines protecting and saving lives. Chaisson has had 12 years of emergency response training and wouldn’t trade his experience for anything.

“It’s not an easy job by any means, but I feel it’s my calling,” said Chaisson. “The challenges and the risks we take are worth it to keep our colleagues and communities safe.”

Across all LyondellBasell facilities, there is steadfast admiration, respect and an unwavering commitment to our first responders. From the biggest to the smallest donations, volunteer efforts and initiatives, our employees are eager and passionate about supporting those who stand guard for us.
